History of Tabla

The study of tabla is an oral tradition. It is a continuation of the pakhawaj repertoire, which is thousands of years old. It has developed into a refined style, technique and literature.

The literature of drum is divided into two categories - fixed rhythmic compositions and themes and variations. In ancient times, a language was created to describe the sound called bols. Some of these words are derived from Sanskrit and from the vibrations of the universe.

There are about sixteen different bols arranged like poetry, in phrases, sentences, paragraphs, chapters and novels. These references are the fixed compositions that have specific names, categories and meaning to players. A person who studies tabla has to memorize all of these compositions. They are preserved in notebooks with only words and not musical notations. These bols are enough information for a tabla player to perform the music. The other technique tabla players use is theme and variations technique which includes improvisation.
